Iconic triathlon event gets royal seal of approval
One of the UK’s original and most iconic multi-sport events, the Windsor Triathlon, has now been named the Royal Windsor Triathlon. As part of a number of improvements for its 27th year in 2017, the event gave athletes the opportunity to run on the spectacular Long Walk, right in front of the world famous Windsor Castle. In addition, the Royal Windsor Triathlon has an updated cycle course and expanded its popular ‘Mates Waves’, even introducing a first-timer friendly Macmillan Beginner’s Wave.
Since 1990 the event’s unmistakeable run course has been hugely popular, giving triathletes the opportunity to race on closed roads alongside the walls of the castle, home to The Queen and over 900 years of Royal history. In 2017 the UK’s best triathlon run course got even better, with participants now being taken fully onto Royal grounds, running from the gates of the castle and into gorgeous Windsor Great Park. This beautiful addition is a glorious climax to the testing course, and is typical of an event that loves to mix tradition with evolution. Those competing in both the Olympic (1,500m swim, 40km cycle, 10km run) and Sprint (750m swim, 20km cycle, 5km run) distances will experience the new extension.
Nick Rusling, CEO of organisers Human Race Events, said “It’s only appropriate that an event so important to the history of triathlon is given the Royal seal of approval. It’s a great honour for us to be able to use the Royal prefix and the stunning Long Walk, which we know people are going adore running on. It’s something we have been working towards for many years.”
The event has been named the BTF ‘Triathlon of the Year’ a record seven times, and is known for a challenging and memorable course that includes a start in the River Thames, transition in Alexandra Gardens, and cycling through picturesque Berkshire countryside. Previous winners include Stuart Hayes, Emma Pallant, Spencer Smith, and Richard Stannard.
